My dog Cedar was born April 1, 1997, making her fourteen years old today. She's a little stiffer, and not quite as strong as she used to be, but she can still keep up with the young dog in a race, at least for the first lap. She's got the heart of a lion, and her mind is undimmed. Here's to you, Cedar!

Baby Cedar

Cedar in the sunshine. Obviously many months ago here in rainy Oregon.

Script details for the upcoming 20,000 Leagues prequel were leaked a little while back. It wasn't pretty.

In many ways the script seemed a retconned jumble of the Disney film and Verne's Mysterious Island backstory. And perhaps to have continuity with James Mason's elegant accent, they made Nemo a British officer with sympathies towards the Indian rebels, instead of the actual Indian rebel he's supposed to be. Not too long after the script showed up on the internet, there were reports that the story was getting a major overhaul. No news on the revision so far.

But just in case they decide to go with Verne's version, I've got their lead picked out: Ajay Devgan.

It's recently been announced that Disney Studios will soon begin production of a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea prequel. It's an exciting prospect, yet one that fills me with a number of questions, particularly because Disney's 1954 film deviated from Verne's novel in some important ways.

The prequel is said to center on Captain Nemo's backstory, including the construction of the Nautilus. Will the prequel follow the Disney version that Nemo and his crew escaped from the slave camp of Rorapendi, or Verne's version that Nemo was an exiled Indian prince who fought in the Sepoy Rebellion? Will the murder of Nemo's family stem from his refusal to give up the secret of nuclear power (Disney), or remain rooted in the anti-colonial sentiments Verne intended? It most certainly will feature Vulcania, a Disney invention. And perhaps most important of all, who will they find to play Captain Nemo who can even begin to approach James Mason's iconic performance in that role?

All I can say is that I have a vested interest in this all, and will be waiting to see how it all plays out....

I'm free! I'm free!

Maybe only other Portlanders can appreciate my glee at being freed from my house after the record snowfall of the past two weeks began to melt away this weekend. And yes, I know twenty inches wouldn't make any headlines with those of you in the Midwest or Northeast, but Portland, OR doesn't usually get that much snow so our regional governments are a little light in the way of snow removal equipment. My Jeep has always gotten me around without a problem, but the trips I had to make to work last week were nothing short of horrific. Deep snow ruts, semis sideways in the lanes, cars in the ditch...it was just no fun at all.

So even though I have at least a couple dozen fifteen to twenty foot branches lying in my yard, dropped by the Douglas firs around my house, I decided to take a break from shoveling and clean-up to go to a movie. I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and I highly recommend it, especially on the big screen. I was so immersed in its world that it was actually disorienting to walk back into the mall. Other movies have been equally or even more engrossing, but I never left the theater thinking I was in the GFFA or the Texas of No Country for Old Men. But after leaving Slumdog, I had definite culture shock. Everything just looked wrong.

I've read some reviews that say the movie plays too much on the stereotype of India's poverty, and that may be true. I did think during the film that one had only to travel to Tijuana to see similar despair, not half way around the globe. Still, it was a vivid and eye-opening experience, and a movie I'll be thinking about for days.

Title : In Another Form

Author : jedinemo

Rating and disclaimer : Rated PG-13. The Star Wars Universe belongs to George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd, and I have gained nothing but satisfaction from this fanfic.

Summary : Secluded in his chamber on board the Death Star, Darth Vader contemplates the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

A/N: Many thanks to tartanshell for the beta.

Weary and muscle-sore, Darth Vader entered the sole hyperbaric chamber installed on the Death Star. Smaller than his quarters on Devastator, but larger than the secondary workstation he also used on his own ship, this chamber had become a necessity since his involvement with the space station had increased. While it was more sparsely furnished than his quarters, it still held the essentials: a broad synthleather armchair, a console workstation, and a basic 'fresher.

The chamber was certainly a necessity today. He closed the seal and watched the pressure gauge rise, impatient for it to reach the correct level. All he wanted was to get out of the suit and get a few hours of rest before the Death Star emerged from hyperspace outside the planet Yavin. After the events of today, he should have felt exhilarated, but instead he was nagged by a hollow dissatisfaction. For years he'd dreamt of the day when he would vanquish Obi-Wan and reap revenge for the damage his old master had done to him. In his dreams he always felt triumphant as he stood over Obi-Wan's body, but the reality of the event had been far less gratifying.

Summary : Darth Vader has an unsettling encounter within the Imperial Palace that changes the course of Galactic history.

Timeline : A few years before the events of ANH.

Epilogue

"Leave this to the politicians, Anakin," Obi-Wan said. "You know you hate this."

Darth Vader flinched at the name. All he could think of was his apprentice, but he knew Obi-Wan had great difficulty addressing him as Vader. He looked up from the stacks of flimsiplast spread over his end of the elegant blackwood dining table. He'd taken to working in this sunlit room in the mornings, even if all he could do was watch Luke and Obi-Wan eat. With its expansive view of the Imperial Center skyline, it was far more soothing than the colorless war rooms that used to be his habit. Or maybe it was just the company.

His eyes refocused on the document in front of him. Assuredly it was in Basic, though the lawyers had done their best to render it incomprehensible. Obi-Wan was right: he did hate this. But there were certain things he had to ensure were in place. "I cannot trust the politicians with my plans. Besides, what else would I do?"

A/N While this is the last chapter, there is an epilogue.

Chapter Fifteen

Darth Vader wasn't sure where Tarkin had obtained this current batch of soldiers. From their fearlessness and tenacity, he wondered if Tarkin had ever been granted access to Palpatine's secret cloning facilities on Imperial Center. Though he couldn't see their faces to confirm it, these troopers fought like the original Jango clones. Tough and smart, almost identical to Vader's best from the 501st, they might have even been trained specifically to fight him. Not only were they willing to come after him, they seemed to have a plan for going about it.

Chapter Fourteen

The briefing room erupted into a flurry of movement. Anakin rose with the other men, the idea that the mission required a Force sensitive pilot still with him. It wasn't a conscious thought; instead he had the sensation of being thrust forward by some great current in the Force. Only Luke's hand on his forearm restrained him.

It's finally stopped raining here in Portland, OR (I hope it does soon for those of you in the central US) and it's absolutely gorgeous today.

I was out pulling the well watered and very vigorous weeds in my garden when I came across a wild rabbit nest, and then the little bun itself.

Of course this means its mother comes back at night to eat my flowers, but it's still very cute.

Chapter Thirteen

Luke barely had enough time to respond to the first chime at his cabin door when whoever it was on the other side laid into the alert again. And again. "Just a minute," he said, focusing on using the Force to slide open the door. His arm shook with the effort, and he wondered if he'd ever get to the point where moving objects took the simple pass of fingertips that it did for his father and Ben. Finally the door gave way, and he stumbled back as a tall figure rushed by him, almost knocking him over.
