It's recently been announced
that Disney Studios will soon begin production of a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
prequel. It's an exciting prospect, yet one that fills me with a number of questions, particularly because Disney's 1954 film deviated from Verne's novel in some important ways.
The prequel is said to center on Captain Nemo's backstory, including the construction of the Nautilus
. Will the prequel follow the Disney version that Nemo and his crew escaped from the slave camp of Rorapendi, or Verne's version that Nemo was an exiled Indian prince who fought in the Sepoy Rebellion? Will the murder of Nemo's family stem from his refusal to give up the secret of nuclear power (Disney), or remain rooted in the anti-colonial sentiments Verne intended? It most certainly will feature Vulcania, a Disney invention. And perhaps most important of all, who will they find to play Captain Nemo who can even begin to approach James Mason's iconic performance in that role?
All I can say is that I have a vested interest in this all, and will be waiting to see how it all plays out....
